The Power of Focus and Specialization

By Stan Clarke, January 2025

I was recently at an industry conference.  I was talking to someone who asked what Mirador does, and I explained how we specialized in helping people that want income and stability.  He presumptively mentioned the importance of growth and I replied, no – we don’t do that. He impolitely turned and walked away.

Over the last year and a half, I have worked with several marketing people in my efforts to get out the message of Mirador’s great work in our specialized field of income investing.  Despite repeating my income and stability mantra, many of the previous marketing writers still seemed to feel the need to add something about growth.

Both these stories are largely a result of the big investment firms and the mainstream media working closely to influence the common industry narratives that appeal to investors’ two most motivating emotions:

  1. Greed – leading to excessive focus on promising sounding growth stories
  2. Fear – of missing out (FOMO) on the next big hopeful story or theme

If you are within 10 years of retirement and have already accumulated a reasonable nest egg, or if you are already retired, the problem with allowing these emotions to dictate your portfolio management is twofold:

  1. You cannot afford the risk of hoping for growth investing that may or may not work out within your time frame.
  2. In today’s low-rate environment, you will need expert help achieving income levels and inflation protection that meets your retirement lifestyle dreams while keeping you comfortable about your capital values.

I am in the above group of retired or pre-retirement investors.  For almost 35 years I have invested my family’s wealth the same way I invest my clients’ wealth.  And now, this means we are all invested for income and stability.

Here is an important aspect of the Mirador Income and Stability programs; the brilliant design of our approach, along with our active management and optimization, HAS resulted in capital growth.  We typically allocate between 40 and 70 percent of the assets into common stocks.  Currently the stocks we hold are in a wide range of sectors, ranging from real estate to banks and insurance companies to base metal and oil and gas and technology companies.  In addition to the income related factors, Mirador’s quantitative stock models also include what we call high impact factors – factors that often lead to better stock price performance such as earnings surprise, earnings momentum, and analysts’ revisions.  Additionally, our clients that don’t need income yet have been pleased with reinvesting their generous distributions and achieving compound growth in their portfolio value.

When I started in the investment industry in 1990, we were trained to be everything to anybody that had money.  We would have meetings with prospective investors to discover their investment objective and no matter what that objective was, we would present a solution.  The difference in solutions was largely the asset mix of the portfolio recommended – the mix between growth, security and income investments or products.  This was adhered to largely because of the scarcity mentality that humans naturally have – an investment advisor was evaluated and compensated based on assets under management and revenue created.  We wanted every prospect to be a client to increase our asset and revenue results, so we were “jacks of all trades but masters of none”.

Fast forward to 2025.  The internet and social media have opened the whole world to every investment advisor.  There is no shortage of prospective investors.  But the scarcity mentality will always exist, and hence most investment advisors continue to try to do it all for anyone.  Not Mirador.  We know that there are plenty of people that need what we do and will benefit immensely from working with Mirador to achieve high levels of income with comfortably stable capital values.

Mirador is the only full-service investment firm using active, data-based investment management to fulfill one investor goal – high income with comfortable stability.  This can’t be done well unless it is the sole focus of the firm and its teams.  Highly successful income investing is not simple or easy in today’s world.  It is a specialty field within the investment industry that requires focus, dedication, and expertise in numerous complimentary but uncorrelated income investing styles.  Capital stability requires decades of experience, technical savvy, and consistent execution through the market cycles.  Despite the singular focus, excellence in income and stability requires multi-disciplinary research, sophisticated implementation, and advanced tools and programs that are too expensive and time consuming for individual income investors to implement.  But Mirador takes care of all this and serves up the tax-effective high income and comfortable stability that our clients need and love.
